Closing Reception for Crowded Table + Surface Feast

WORKSHOP:
Saturday November 21st 1-4pm
Surface Feast Workshop- embellish your own bowl

Cost: $75
Maximum of 6 people
Sign up by emailing admin@overlapartspace.org.

In this 3 hour class you will learn about several effective methods of applying and removing underglaze to or from clay in order to create a surface design. We will cover brushing, slip trailing, sponging, resists, and sgraffito (carving through colored underglaze to expose the white clay underneath). With this new knowledge and our tools and support you will choose a “blank,” premade bowl and decorate it as you wish. The bowls are food and dishwasher safe and have a diameter of 5-8 inches. Your bowl will be glazed and fired and available for you to pick up on December 19th at our closing reception (in time for holiday gifting.)

See what artists have been making in our studio this fall (and bid!) @surface.feast on Instagram starting November 14th.

Join Jaimee Veronneau Roberts, a fiber artist and weaving instructor, in making a functional piece of handwoven artwork.

From Jaimee: “In the spirit of a Crowded Table, let me share my smorgasbord of skills and color appreciation during a two-hour, one-on-one weaving class. Together, we’ll work on an all-dressed loom, warped with a buffet of bright colors. The class participant will be able to choose their weft colors and promptly begin creating their lunch napkin. You’ll learn weaving terminology, different weaving structures, and pattern design. You’ll leave with an understanding of how a floor loom works, a brilliant lunch napkin, and a donation to the RI Food Bank.

This project was inspired by Sorosis, the first professional women’s club formed in NYC at the famous Delmonico’s Restaurant in 1868. I imagine that as it took shape, it grew to be an overwhelmingly crowded table full of confidence, curiosity, and encouragement. My Sorosis is my Monday night weaving class at the Saunderstown Weaving School with my crème de la crème instructor, Norma Smayda. It’s an intergenerational group of women and a few men that relish in sharing weaving tips, grandchildren’s photos, and potluck recipes. Together we’ve created a community that feeds off each other’s exploration of our craft, all while supporting each other’s personal lives and goals.”
